Karl Benz was born Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant, in Karlsruhe Germany. When Benz was 2 years old, his father (Johann George Benz) died in an accident and to the name of Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant changed to Karl Friedrich Benz to remind him of his father.
